Native American Day in California is an opportunity to reflect on resilience, cultural recognition, and the ongoing struggles faced by Native communities. Established to honor the history, contributions, and vibrant culture of California’s Indigenous peoples, this day serves as a call to action.
As someone who studies and speaks about overcoming discrimination and building pathways to equity, I believe that the Native American Day challenges all of us to confront inequities and build fairer systems for the future.
California has been home to Indigenous peoples for at least 13,000 years (Lightfoot & Parrish, 2009). These communities developed sophisticated systems of land conservation, agriculture, and trade that laid the foundations for the California we know today.
Just as real estate rests on land, our communities stand on the legacy of Native stewardship. Yet all too often, their contributions go uncredited. Recognizing this history is really about acknowledging the roots of our culture and equity in our society.
The story of California’s Native peoples is also one of tragedy. Colonization brought violence, disease, and displacement (Cook, 1976). These injustices left deep scars, and today many Native communities still face unequal access to education, healthcare, housing, and economic opportunity (California Native American Heritage Commission, 2022).
Discrimination blocks wealth and stability. Native communities show us how unfair systems affect generations, making the fight for cultural equity not just a Native concern, but everyone’s responsibility.
Here are simple ways you can support equity and recognition:
Celebrating Native American Day strengthens communities across by promoting awareness of cultural recognition and cultural equity. Supporting Native-led businesses, listening to Indigenous voices, and visiting cultural centers are practical ways to participate.
In real estate, finance, and leadership, representation matters. Acknowledging Native history challenges us to adopt more inclusive decision-making and community development practices.
Native American Day is a reminder that history is alive in the land beneath us and the systems we create. It calls on us to honor heritage, confront inequity, and champion representation. Let this day spark conversations about justice and equity, and commit to building systems that leave no community behind. In every industry—from real estate to finance—recognizing and respecting the contributions of our Native communities is a step toward stronger, more equitable futures.
